Spiritan missionary in Tanga

Caption: Spiritan missionary (CSSP) cares for children in Tanga, East Africa. Coming from Alsace (France), the Spiritans established themselves in Bagamoyo, the first Catholic post on the continent, as early as 1868. They could therefore escape the rule of the Muslim Sultan of Zanzibar. Bagamoyo would become the starting point of every expeditions to the heart of the African continent. The fact that the missionary doesn’t wear the pith helmet, which is generalised from 1890, indicates this is a very early picture.
