François Xavier Borghero and François Fernandez

Caption: Missionaries François Xavier Borghero and François Fernandez pose alongside ransomed slaves in an improvised studio in Ouidah. They were the first two missionaries of the Society of African Missions (SMA) to establish themselves on a long term basis on the “slave coast” in the Gulf of Benin. The struggle against slavery and slave traders played a major part in the missionary revival in 19th century Africa. The fundraising for the ransom of slave children led to the creation of the OPM (Oeuvres Pontificales missionnaires).
